What pet relocation actually costs in India

The short answer

Domestic pet relocation in India costs roughly ₹9,000–₹55,000 depending on distance and mode, and international relocation from India costs roughly ₹85,000–₹4,50,000 per pet. The largest single variable is not your pet's weight. It is the volumetric weight of the crate, followed by destination-country requirements such as rabies titre testing and quarantine.

Almost every pet parent begins with the same question and gets the same unhelpful answer: “it depends.” It does depend, but on a small, knowable set of things. Here is the whole cost structure, line by line, so you can sanity-check any quote you receive, from us or from anyone else.

Domestic relocation: the cost bands

ModeTypical distanceCost bandDoor-to-door time
Dedicated road vanUnder 1,200 km₹9,000 – ₹45,0004–30 hours
Escorted trainAny₹15,000 – ₹35,00012–40 hours
Air (excess baggage)Any₹18,000 – ₹40,000Same day
Air (manifest cargo)Any₹25,000 – ₹55,000Same day

Those bands assume door-to-door service: pickup from your home, crate, vet certificate, carrier booking, terminal handling and delivery at the other end. A quote materially below the band usually means something has been left out: most often the crate, the vet visit, or the delivery leg.

The single biggest cost driver: volumetric weight

Airlines do not charge for your pet. They charge for the space the crate occupies. Freight is calculated on volumetric weight (length × width × height in centimetres, divided by a dimensional factor (commonly 6,000)) and compared against actual weight, with the higher of the two billed.

International relocation: where the money actually goes

Line itemTypical costNotes
Airline freight₹45,000 – ₹2,50,000Volumetric; the dominant cost
IATA crate₹4,500 – ₹22,000Size class dependent
Rabies titre (RNATT) test₹8,000 – ₹18,000Approved laboratory + logistics
Import permit₹3,000 – ₹35,000Highly destination dependent
AQCS export NOC & endorsement₹3,000 – ₹8,000Government fees + filing
Veterinary certificates₹2,000 – ₹6,000Health certificate, treatments
Destination clearance & delivery₹15,000 – ₹80,000Partner agent at the other end
Quarantine (AU / NZ only)₹90,000 – ₹1,80,000Mandatory, government facility

Australia and New Zealand sit at the very top of the range because quarantine is compulsory and priced per day. The USA, UK, Canada, the EU, UAE and Singapore generally allow direct release when documentation is complete, which keeps the total far lower.

What a good quote looks like

Ask for the quote as separate lines, not one number. A trustworthy quote names the airline or train, the crate size class, the specific certificates being obtained, both transfer legs, taxes, and what happens to your money if the move is postponed. If any of those are missing, ask before you pay.

  • Crate: size class, whether it is supplied or rented, and who owns it after
  • Freight: carrier, sector, and whether the figure is volumetric or actual
  • Veterinary: which certificates, and whether the consult fee is included
  • Permits: named, with government fee shown separately from service fee
  • Transfers: pickup and delivery, with any distance limits stated
  • Taxes: GST shown explicitly, not folded in

Where people genuinely overspend

  1. Buying the wrong crate online, then buying a second one that is actually compliant.
  2. Flying a pet on a sector where a 5-hour road van would have been calmer and cheaper.
  3. Starting the rabies titre process late and paying for expedited everything downstream.
  4. Choosing a cargo booking when the same pet qualified for checked excess baggage at half the price.
  5. Paying twice for documentation because the first agent filed under the wrong import pathway.
The cheapest pet move is the one that is planned early. Every rupee of urgency premium is avoidable.
